Reverse engineering can be done when a part or machine has shortcomings and original designers are not available to improve it.
 
Reverse Engineering     Reverse engineering is the process of discovering the technological principles of a device, object, or system through analysis of its structure, function, and operation.
 
Another obsolescence originated problem which can be solved by reverse engineering is the need to support (maintenance and supply for continuous operation) existing, legacy devices which are no longer supported by their original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

SMC uses 3D CAD software for reverse engineering. This allows SMC to provide a way to generate new or missing manufacturing CAD files and update/create as-built documentation. The software allows us to measure a parts and create a fully featured CAD model which can then be used make manufacturing drawings, pattern drawings for castings and for CNC machining of the final part.
