This standard Sand Cooler-
Classifier design
has been the industry standard for decades. The SCC's heat
exchanger is a single-pass, counter-flow design. Air
fluidization provides low wear characteristics. Fines
extraction is accomplished by extraction points in the hood. |

The Standard Cooler-Classifier (SCC) is designed to cool hot
foundry sand*
for reuse in the molding process. This design also provides
for the
efficient removal of sand fines which are typically
generated during casting shakeout. The SCC is provided with
sensors to help provide process control in the sand
reclamation process. Additionally,
this unit has been designed for serviceability.
In operation, sand enters the cooler-classifier and is fluidized by
a pressure blower with multiple inlets to the
lower chamber of the fluidbed. Each inlet comes with an
adjustable baffle used for adjusting the fluidbed depth.
Fluidizing air then passes through a metal distributor plate
and into the sand. By adjusting both the bed depth and the
negative extraction pressure varying degrees of fines can be
removed. |

Cooler Classifier - Standard | |

This cooler-classifier is fluidbed design with a
single pass, counter flow heat exchanger.

|
The SCC's heat exchanger is a single pass, counter flow
design. Hot sand enters the unit falling into a fluidbed
surrounding the heat exchanger. Fluidizing air gently moves
the sand towards the discharge end of the cooler-classifier. As this is
taking place, the fluidized sand grains are coming in
contact with the cooling tubes thereby conducting heat away
from the sand. Sand leaves the cooler next to the water inlet
bulkhead of the heat exchanger giving the sand the lowest
possible temperature before exiting the unit.
The SCC is typically used with either open or closed looped water
cooling towers. At the customer’s request, a
refrigerant type cooling system can be supplied with the SCC
to provide lower sand temperatures of approximately 75
degrees F.
