應(yīng)廣東省可再生能源重點實驗室的邀請,新加坡國立大學(xué)建筑系智能材料實驗室負(fù)責(zé)人KUA HARN WEI副教授將于2025年4月16日(周三)來訪并舉行學(xué)術(shù)報告會。報告會安排如下:

報告題目:Biochar and biomass materials for sustainable buildings applications ?
報告摘要:Biochar,a carbon-rich material derived from the pyrolysis of biomass,has gained attention for its potential applications in sustainable building materials. Its unique properties,such as high porosity,thermal stability,and carbon sequestration ability,make it a valuable additive in construction materials. Associate Professor Kua Harn Wei from the National University of Singapore has been pioneering the use of biochar—a carbon-rich material derived from pyrolyzed biomass—in sustainable building applications. His research focuses on integrating biochar into cement and phase change materials (PCM) to enhance structural performance and environmental sustainability. One of Prof. Kua's notable achievements is developing a method to recycle wood waste,particularly sawdust,into biochar for concrete applications. By incorporating this biochar into cement mixtures,the resulting concrete exhibits up to 20% increased strength and 50% improved water impermeability. This innovation not only enhances building durability but also offers a sustainable solution for managing wood waste in Singapore,where over 530,000 tonnes were produced in 2016 alone.
Beyond material improvements,biochar work contributes to carbon sequestration efforts. Biochar effectively locks in carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere through biomass decay or incineration. Applying this technology in concrete construction presents a novel approach to storing carbon within building structures while promoting recycling and reducing environmental impact.

Many Sustainability Benefits to use the biochar in buildings such as Stores carbon long-term,reducing CO?emissions;Utilizes agricultural and forestry waste,promoting circular economy principles;Improves insulation and thermal regulation,reducing energy consumption.;and Reduces the reliance on non-renewable resources and mitigates pollution. Biochar-based materials present a promising pathway toward greener and more resilient construction practices.
報告人簡介:Kua Harn Wei副教授是新加坡國立大學(xué)(NUS)建筑環(huán)境系的杰出學(xué)者。他擁有麻省理工學(xué)院(MIT)的建筑工程博士學(xué)位,以及MIT的土木與環(huán)境工程、技術(shù)與政策雙碩士學(xué)位,并在新加坡國立大學(xué)獲得理論物理學(xué)碩士學(xué)位。Kua教授領(lǐng)導(dǎo)著NUS的智能材料實驗室,他的研究主要集中在以下幾個領(lǐng)域:(i) 生命周期可持續(xù)性評估;(ii) 開發(fā)能夠直接捕獲二氧化碳和凈化空氣的生物基建筑材料;(iii) 制定促進家庭節(jié)能的政策。他的團隊的一項顯著成就是開發(fā)了一種通過將木廢料制成的生物炭整合到混凝土中以增強其性能的方法。這一創(chuàng)新不僅提高了混凝土的強度,還增強了其不透水性,同時通過回收木廢料為環(huán)境可持續(xù)性做出了貢獻。Kua教授的研究成果得到了廣泛的國際認(rèn)可,被任命為國際先進材料協(xié)會(IAAM)新加坡國家理事會理事,并被評為IAAM會士。2022年,他在瑞典舉辦的先進材料世界大會上發(fā)表了關(guān)于生物炭作為可持續(xù)建筑材料的主題演講,并榮獲IAAM科學(xué)家獎。
除了研究,Kua教授還在NUS擔(dān)任過多個行政和領(lǐng)導(dǎo)職務(wù),包括自2016年起擔(dān)任助理院長(學(xué)術(shù)),以及2013年至2016年期間擔(dān)任副系主任(研究)。2021年7月,他被任命為NUS肯特崗宿舍的舍監(jiān),在那里他致力于營造一個充滿活力的住宿社區(qū)。他對教學(xué)的奉獻精神也得到了廣泛認(rèn)可,曾多次獲獎,包括2011/2012和2013/2014學(xué)年的年度卓越教學(xué)獎,以及2011/2012至2014/2015學(xué)年連續(xù)四年的設(shè)計與環(huán)境學(xué)院教學(xué)獎。
Kua教授在研究、領(lǐng)導(dǎo)和教學(xué)方面的廣泛貢獻對可持續(xù)建筑材料和環(huán)境保護領(lǐng)域產(chǎn)生了深遠影響。
